The Very First Lighter Phone SB6309

Although I fully admit to chuckling quite a bit after first seeing this cellphone with a built-in cigarette lighter, I can see some practicality with it. After all, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard of my smoking friends losing their lighter. I’ve been asked numerous times if I happen to have a lighter on me, despite that they’re fully aware I don’t smoke. Having a lighter built into your cellphone would come in incredibly handy. After all, your phone is almost always somewhere within reach.....

GeoCities accounts are no longer available!

Posted by Wonderful-Tricks

A bit of bad news folks! Internet giant Yahoo! has finally closed GeoCities. Yahoo had bought GeoCities in the year 1999 for a whooping $4 Bn. During the 90’s, this was one of the most visited sites on the web. But, the current users need not panic, as Yahoo has assured people that they will be able to access GeoCities until later this year.

Yahoo is also encouraging all the current GeoCitiesers to migrate to their web hosting service!

Bye bye GeoCities…..!

Intel Core Duo Vs Core 2 Duo Processors

Posted by Wonderful-Tricks

Intel is one of the most famous and prominent companies in the world that was started as Integrated Electronics Corporation in California in July 1968. It is the largest semiconductor company that invented the x86 series of micro-processors. Intel’s Core brand is a 32 bit mobile dual core x86 CPUs. The Core brand which was launched in 2006 is of two types called “Duo”(has a dual core) and “Solo”(has a dual core but one core is disabled). This is the first processor of Intel that was used in Macintosh computers manufactured by Apple Computers. Intel Core 2 Duo is a 64 bit mobile dual core x86 CPUs based on the Core architecture. This comes in four versions; Solo version, Duo version, Quad version and Extreme version.

The similarities in the features between the Intel Core Duo and Intel Core 2 Duo are:
1. Their production process is the same and the architecture used by Microsoft for them is to put two cores on a single die.
2. They have the same frontside bus that communicates with the CPU and the RAM.
3. The L2 cache that Core Duo has is also present in Core 2 Duo too.

The differences between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are:
1. Intel Core duo has a lower clock speed as compared to Intel Core 2 Duo. This means that Core 2 Duo is faster in performance as compared to Core Duo which was actually slower than the Pentium line of processors.
2. Core 2 Duo offers a better performance while downloading graphics, rendering videos and also, checking a document for spelling and grammar errors (spell check feature). The speed of the Intel Core 2 Duo processor is more than 25 times higher than that of the Intel Core Duo processor.
3. The cost of Intel Core 2 Duo processor is much higher than the cost of Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
4. Intel Core Duo had only 2 versions where as Intel Core 2 Duo has four. Intel Core Duo is now gradually moving out of the market and it will be completed out in a few months.

The benefits of Intel Core Duo:
1. Efficient power consumption. The system performance per watt of energy consumed was very good as compared to the previously used single core processors manufactured by Intel.
2. It offered higher speeds of multitasking as compared to the previous versions of the Intel single core processors in the market.

The disadvantages of Intel Core Duo:
1. Non parallel applications consumed more power than the previous processors.
2. Could not offer support for 64 bit processes.

The benefits of Intel Core 2 Duo:
1. Increased processing capacity of the processors. This helps to multitask easily. You can play music in the background comfortable while downloading any videos and also working on some pictures.
2. Reduced power consumption. This processor is very energy efficient. With Intel Core2 Duo, you can experience increased performance with reduced power consumption.

The limitations of Intel Core 2 Duo are:
The cost of Intel Core 2 Duo is on the higher side. This is the only flip side to this wonderful processor from Intel.

Samsung Pixon M8800 Review

Posted by Wonderful-Tricks

The Samsung pixon is sleek slide phone with an 8mega pixel and is also called the Samsung M8800.The pixon is by far the most pretty especially with its standard looks. The pixon has a touch screen making the user access files or make calls quick.

The front screen is large and is able to display more than twelve icons plus the wall paper and screen saver. It weighs 122g.The weight is a bit chunky. However considering some other phones the pixon weighs lesser. The phone has a plastic casing which helps minimize the weight. The Samsung pixon has a hold button on the left edge with a switcher key that creates a grid of short cuts.

Another feature of the pixon is that it has a micro SD card slot which will allow the user to boost his memory if he needs to .The pixon has an average storage of 200MB which is built in. There are different memory cards that can be purchased like the 1GB and 2GB.On the right edge of the Samsung pixon is a button which doubles as an instant shortcut to the camera and camera options and settings. The other is the volume button which also adds up as a double zoom manager in the camera.

Samsung is a big phone company and are the creators of the pixon M8800.The picture clarity is the most amazing feature of the phone. The phone has a much high clarity than some photographic cameras. The pixon was even confirmed by t3 to be the best gadget in the market. The phone was given two thumbs up for its great features. The phone is slim and has been marketed world wide. Especially for its thinness of 13.8mm.Entertainment is the reason why people like the pixon. It can store up to 200 songs without a memory card? Videos can also be captured at 30fps (720*480 resolution) and even take a film in slow motion.

Bluetooth is also one of the phones features, this network enables the owner to change and receive data from another phone with the same feature. Its battery lasts for three days unlike the other Samsung models. The screen is automatic and helps the owner save more battery by reducing the back light when the phone is not been used. The phone book memory is high and thee user can save over a thousand contacts. Other features of the phone are alarms, calendar, to do lists, reminder settings, calculators and timers. When buying this phone from a shop it comes with a data cable, a charger and also an instruction booklet.

Google Adsense FAQs - Tips

Posted by Wonderful-Tricks

How are Google ads targeted? How does Google know when someone clicks on my ad?The ads we display on a webpage are determined automatically by our system based on a number of factors such as the page content, linguistics, keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web.

When a user clicks on an ad on your website, Google receives a signal and records it. Your account is also updated with the impression and CPC data. When you log into the AdSense website the impressions, clicks, and earnings are for the date displayed in the drop-down menu next to ‘View’.

What do you mean by CPC, CPM and CTR ?
CPC is the amount an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on his/her ad. Google AdWords has a CPC pricing system. CPM stands for “cost per 1000 impressions.” Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served and pay each time their ad appears. CTR is the number of link clicks divided by the number of link impressions.

For publishers, this means you’ll earn revenue each time a CPM ad is served to your page. CPM ads compete against pay-per-click (or CPC, cost per click) ads in our ad auction, and we’ll display whichever ad is expected to earn more revenue for you.

How do we determine if CPC or CPM ads are running on our site?
CPC and CPM ads will directly compete to show on your pages, and we’ll display whichever ad will generate the maximum revenue. Placement targeting will work to your benefit, as more competition among ads means higher potential earnings for you.

To determine whether placement-targeted cost-per-thousand-impression ads are appearing on your site, visit your Advanced Reports page. Choose AdSense for content as the product and select to show data by ‘Individual Ad’ - you’ll see a checkbox titled ‘Show data by targeting type - contextual or placement.’ When you check this box, you’ll be able to see how many placement-targeted ads you’re displaying on your pages

How do I implement code?
Once your AdSense application has been approved, you can follow our quick start guide which will help you generate AdSense code from your account

1. Generate ad code on your website
2. View the source code of your web page
3. Select a spot between the opening and closing tags in your source code (What do you mean by BODY tags?)
4. Paste ad code on your website without making any changes
5. Save changes and upload or publish the updated pages to your server
Start displaying Google ads on your website. Hurray!

Could I get help with pasting my ad code on Blogger, Wordpress and other Content Management Platforms?
We have a detailed topic that covers all these questions in our Help Center.

Can I paste ad code on multiple websites?
Yes, you’re welcome to place Google ads or an AdSense for search box on any number of websites (you need to have access to the source code of the page) that complies with our program policies ( http://www.google.com/adsense/policies). There’s no need for us to review the site beforehand - simply copy and paste the ad code or search code onto your website, and we’ll automatically detect and serve ads to the new site.

I have placed my ad code on multiple sites. How can I view separate reports for each site?
Yes, you can do so by creating a URL channel for each site. You will not need to modify your ad code in any way, and your channels will start tracking ad performance almost immediately. View detailed instructions on creating URL channels
How can I solve my account specific issues without contacting AdSense support?

We understand that you may have account specific issues related to login, payments and other topics. Please know that we have step-by-step instructions available in the form of a troubleshooters (listed below) which will help you resolve these issues quickly and easily.

How do I change the color of my AdSense ads?
You can select from a number of built-in color palettes, or you can create up to 100 of your own. For detailed instruction, please visit our Help Center

Which ad formats perform better ? How many ad units can I display on a particular web page?
As a rule of thumb, wider ad formats tend to outperform their taller counterparts, due to their reader-friendly format. For more information about desigining successful ads, visit this link
1. Three standard ad units
2. Three link units
3. Two search boxes

Can I implement only image ads? Will I earn more by displaying only image ads?
Yes. You can choose to run ad units that will display only image ads by selecting the Image ads only option when generating your ad layout code.

For maximum revenue potential, however, we suggest selecting Text and image ads. This allows us to serve the most targeted and highest revenue generating ads to your pages, providing a better user experience to your site’s visitors and potentially increasing your AdSense revenue.

Can I filter out certain ads that appear on my web page?
We’re happy to let you know you can prevent Google ads from up to 200 sites from showing on your site by using the Competitive Ad Filter. To find detailed instructions on using your filter list, please see our online resource

We’re also excited to inform you about our new Category filtering feature that will give publishers the ability to block ads that fall into specific categories such as dating, religion, and politics. To know more, read our blogpost

What are invalid clicks and how does Google distinguish them?
Clicks or page impressions generated through prohibited means, and intended to artificially increase click or impression counts on a publisher account. Google’s proprietary technology analyzes clicks and impressions to determine whether they fit a pattern of use intended to artificially drive up an advertiser’s clicks or a publisher’s earnings. More…

What is smart pricing and how do I find out if I am smart priced ?
Smart pricing is used to ensure that both the publisher and advertiser receives the maximum benefit from the ads that are displayed on the Google network. Please visit our blogpost to learn more.

This stuff was sent to me as a follow up to Adsense Newbie Orientation webinar.

Apple created iPhone which looked like iPods, now Microsoft is following up by creating the Microsoft Pink Phone after their Music Player Zune with similar looks and Touch Screen Functionality. When you compare of sales of iPod Vs Zune, you would know the result , with Zune nowhere in the comparisions because of very less sales, hence we can think of 1 thing, Microsoft should continue with their Operating Systems Business rather than getting into these new things which can #fail.

Everyone is calling it as a “True competition to the iPhone” , but in my view there is a competition when there are two products being launched at the same time, and when they try to capture the market. Currently the scenario says that Apple iPhone has already take a huge share in the market with success making the Microsoft Pink Phone a bit harder to penetrate and gain trust unless it can offer everything which iPhone does not offer and also some really efficient functions.

The phone code named as ‘Zune 3′ was a Zune Concept Phone which you can find here - a complete prototype of Zune 80 with internet explorer, wifi marketplace, common phone apps. The Looks are good, with promising features, now if the price is good with Microsoft having plans to make money their Value Added Services[VAS] or Apps like iPhone offers then they can seriously create their own market for the ZunePhone.

In a not-totally surprising -- yet still kind of striking -- turn of events, Microsoft is reporting that its sales have fallen for the first time in 23 year. You read that right, 23 years. According to numbers that the company has just released, sales fell 6 percent year-over-year, while overall net income dropped a staggering 32 percent. Those numbers are significant, but what's more telling is where those losses are coming from. Namely? Netbooks. Apparently, in the midst of a global downturn consumers really are buying cheaper, especially when it comes to tech, which puts a fairly significant crunch on Redmond's bottom line. A CNN reports suggests that the the presence of Linux on those devices has contributed to the hurt here, but it's more likely the combo of a market still unwelcoming to Vista and the wide popularity of XP on the low-power systems has more to do with these dipping profit margins. Oh, and that general, awful market depression. Still, it should serve as some kind of wake up call to Microsoft that just being the biggest might not be enough to keep it afloat during the crisis we're in the midst of. Hey Windows 7 -- no pressure, right?

According to a press release, Microsoft’s net income fell 32 percent to $2.98 billion, or 33 cents per share, in its third quarter ended March 31. Quarterly revenue stood at $13.56 billion, a 6 percent drop compared to revenues in Q3FY08.

Microsoft has said weakness in the global PC market negatively impacted its results. Experts are also putting a lot of the blame on the growing netbook market. With the economy the way it is, a significant amount of people are turning to budget laptops or netbooks for their basic computing needs. While Microsoft recently boasted that 96 percent of new netbooks run Windows, it’s not exactly the money maker it could be for the company.

A recent report suggested that Microsoft makes in or around $15 on every Windows XP netbook sold. While this still amounts to a tidy profit when you consider XP is an operating system the company is “putting to bed,” it’s no where near what the company would make if everyone went out and bought laptops that came bundled with Vista.

Microsoft plans to cut costs with the its first-ever large-scale job cuts - in January the group announced 5,000 redundancies, including 1,400 immediately. Shares in the group have slumped by 40% in the last 12 months, but were up 3% in after-hours trading on Thursday following an announcement the 2010 release of new product Windows 7 is on track. The group's chief financial officer Chris Liddell said he expected recovery to be slow and gradual. "I didn't see any improvement at the end of the quarter that gives me encouragement that we are at a bottom and coming out of it," he said. Company chief executive Steve Ballmer also said he was still interested in a potential partnership with Yahoo - although Microsoft no longer wants to buy the search engine.

Talks of a huge takeover rumbled on for several months before falling through last year. Microsoft's disappointing figures followed strong results from both Apple and Google this month. Apple reported a 15% increase in profits, while Google's profits rose by 9%.

Have you ever received an SMS from your bank, service provider, or a company, that has been prefixed with codes? For example: An SMS from ICICI Bank that reads: IZ-ICICIBANK. Ever wondered what these codes really mean?

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduced these codes in order to curb bulk SMS providers from unsolicited commercial communication. Now that these codes are implemented, the sender can be traced, if necessary, as these codes reveal the location, the name of the company and the service provider.

This is how the code should look like:
XY-name of the company
X = Code of the service provider

Y = Location

Which means, IZ-ICICIBANK would be:

I = Idea Cellular (service provider)

Z = Maharashtra (location)

A list of Service Provider codes & Service Area codes:

codes list

So, I am sure next time you get an SMS with a code like this, you’ll know what it is.

How to Split Blogger header Into Two different Sections,ya as you have seen header section on left side in blogger layout and and one section in right side where you can add your add banners. Now i will show you how you can split your blogs header into two widgets like the following screenshot.

First i recommend you backup your template or use a test blog for this example I'm going to use the Minima Template so if you are using a different template the code would be different. The default width of the template header-wrapper code is 660px
(if you don't know what I'm talking about see screenshot below)

So I'm going to set the width of the main header section to 350px and float it to the left see screenshot

Now that's done we can create the second section for the right widget so copy the following code

#header2 {
float:right;
width:250px;
}

And paste it some where in between the opening and closing skin tags like done below

Now copy the following code for the new section

<b:section class='header' id='header2' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='yes'/>

And paste it like in below image,so Click the below image to see the codes clearly.

Now save it and go to the page element tab you should have a new section on the right side of the header here's a screenshot of my result

Looky here, it’s yet another smallest flash drive ever! The EagleTec Nano flash drive measures a minuscule 19 x 15 x 6mm and weighs only 3 grams. It manages to stuff as much as 8 gigs of memory in there somewhere… To be fair, I can’t really see how a flash drive could get much smaller than this without being totally impractical and an accidental inhalation risk. But, I have faith that those issues aren’t going to prevent it from happening anyway. The EagleTec Nano flash drives comes with 4 gigs for $22, or 8 gigs for $33.

Taiwanese computer vendor Acer is planning to introduce an Android-based smart phone by the end of the year to add to the ten phones based on Windows Mobile already in the works for 2009, reports Bloomberg. Acer’s head of mobile-phone products Aymar de Lencquesaing said that the world’s third largest computer maker had made no formal announcements around Android, though “it’s likely that we’ll have one in 2009.”

In February, at Mobile World Congress, Acer unveiled its first four cellphones, which are based on Windows Mobile. Skepticism that the computer vendor can crack the highly competitive smartphone market runs high, but the company plans to differentiate itself by using its presence in computers and now cellphones to offer products that can more easily synch data between devices. De Lencquesaing said in a Bloomberg TV interview, “One of the pain points for users around the world is ‘how do I basically port my environment from one device to another? Because we have a suite of products in the mobile-data space that covers the whole spectrum, we can offer synchronization between all devices.”
Acer has ambitious plans for its cellphone venture. De Lencquesaing reiterated that the computer vendor wants to become one of the top five handset vendors in the world by 2012. In a separate interview with Dow Jones, de Lencquesaing estimated that the company would need to sell in the region between 20 million to 25 million devices a year to reach its goal, based on its analysis of the market. Earlier this year, its Chairman J.T. Wang said the company needs to start offering smartphones, which he believes could eventually supersede PCs altogether.

Microsoft XP in less than $15

Posted by Wonderful-Tricks

Well, well, don’t jump over! While the news is still reported to be a leak, it also has some ifs and buts!
The exact news (leak) is that Microsoft has dropped the price of Windows XP for Netbooks to under $15 per license, which is almost one third of the price of a Windows Vista license that Microsoft typically charges the manufacturers of normal laptop makers when they bundle it with their products.

What is Netbook?

As you may already know, Netbooks are the small portable laptops, designed mostly for accessing only the Internet and remote web-based applications. If you wish to read more about Netbooks, then I will suggest you to visit this page on our all time favorite resource center wikipedia, but only after you read this post completely.

Some Trends

  • Netbooks worldwide are picking up fast from mere 1% market share of the total laptop market in July to an alarming 19% month-on-month market share of laptops in December 2008. [Source: Pricegrabber report]

  • According to an estimate, almost thirty times more netbooks were sold in 2008 than in 2007 (400,000). [Source: eetimes]

  • For 2009, it is estimated that netbook sales will grow 189% to 21.5 million. [Source: eetimes]

All in all, netbook market seems to be the next big fish in this era of economic slowdown, no wonder all the biggies are pulling up their socks to get the big pie.

Here is a quick summary of what is happening in the market:

  • ASUS has allocated engineers to develop netbook based on Google’s Android platform.[Source: Bloomberg]

  • Microsoft attributed its significant declines in Windows revenues last year largely to strong sales of netbooks that undercut its normally much more profitable business. [Source: electronista]

  • Microsoft has already confirmed that it will be providing a version of Windows 7 specifically designed for netbooks. [Source: CNET UK]

  • Dell and HP, the two biggest PC makers, both released a “Mini” series (the Inspiron Mini and HP Mini) in the netbooks market last year.

  • 70% of the total Netbook sales have been in Europe. [Source: UMPC]

So what do we expect?

  • A price war at a B2B level will definitely be transferred down to the consumer level. So expect a further slash in the netbooks prices in the US and Europe.

  • With 3G services being launched in India, the netbooks sales are poised to pick up fast in the Indian market too.

What is in it for me?

Well I would like to see Microsoft extending its price cut policy to off-the-shelf windows licenses for notebooks and PCs in the Indian market. Does anyone have the exact figures of the pirated OS market in India? I am sure no one would like to go for a pirated Windows if they could get a genuine one for Rs. 500. Microsoft could sure earn heavy bucks if they get into a price cut and volume sales game in India.

Researchers at the Centre of Molecular Materials for Photonics and Electronics (CMMPE) (part of the Department’s Photonics Research Group at the University of Cambridge) are leading the way towards the development of extremely high colour resolution laser displays using liquid crystal laser technology. CMMPE has been performing extensive research into a new form of laser technology based on liquid crystals.

With this new methode they facilitate a reduction in the fabrication and materials cost of this currently fabrication-expensive technology. Furthermore, liquid crystal lasers are less likely to suffer from problems such as speckle, which are commonly associated with conventional laser display systems.

They therefore have a much narrower spectral linewidth compared to the relatively broadband RGB sources from other display technologies, including CRT, plasma, LCD and even the latest OLED displays.

Mitsubishi was the first company which introduce a Laser Television the LaserVue.

The Nokia 1100 was never an especially alluring device, even at its launch, but a select few versions of the simplistic cellphone are said to be changing hands for up to €25,000 ($32,328) among criminals. According to unconfirmed reports, the specific 1100’s each show a specific software flaw that, with the correct reprogramming, allows them to intercept the one-time passwords used to authorize online bank transactions.

Only those handsets from a specific German manufacturing batch can be suitable reprogrammed, out of more than 200 million produced since the Nokia 1100’s launch in 2003. The one-time passwords at risk - known as transaction authentication numbers (TAN) - are those sent to online banking users by SMS.
Suspicions were raised when police contacted Ultrascan Advanced Global Investigations six months ago over news that a 1100 had been sold for €5,000; the €25,000 model sold just ten days ago. Ultrascan is yet to obtain an affected handset to test out the exploit.

Although the all-electric Tata Indica on display at the SAE World Congress in Detroit this week is not the soon-to-be-released model, there’s a lot we can learn from the vehicle - and from TM4’s Eriz Azeroual - about how the technology will be implemented when the new model goes on sale in Norway either later this year or in early 2010 (yes, this is later than previously expected). Tata Motors showed off the Indica EV at the Bologna Motor Show in December, but the hatchback is making an appearance in Detroit because of the work that TM4, a subsidiary of Hydro Québec, did providing the permanent magnet motor and the inverter.

TM4’s Azeroual (he’s business development manager there) told us that a limited number of the Indica’s are already testing in Norway and that Tata Motors is “a cool company. Very aggressive.” Even though they’re most famous for the Nano and apparently wanting to dominate the low-end automobile market, in Europe market they want to be known for electric vehicles.
Norway is a perfect entry point to bring an EV to Europe because there is a high tax on gasoline-powered vehicles. The high cost of electric vehilces isn’t totally equalized by the taxes, but EVs and gas-powered vehicle prices end up being “comparable” in Norway and this presents customers with an “interesting choice,” Azeroual said. Following the Norwegian introduction, Tata plans to expand the Indica EV to other European markets and then possibly the U.S.

Computer engineers at Washington University in St. Louis are bringing the minimalist approach to medical care and computing by coupling USB-based ultrasound probe technology with a smartphone, enabling a compact, mobile computational platform and a medical imaging device that fits in the palm of a hand.

William D. Richard, Ph.D., Washington University Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and David Zar, Washington University Research Associate in Computer Science and Engineering, have made commercial USB ultrasound probes compatible with Microsoft Windows Mobile-based smartphones, thanks to a $100,000 grant Microsoft awarded the two in 2008.
In order to make commercial USB ultrasound probes work with smartphones, the researchers had to optimize every aspect of probe design and operation, from power consumption and data transfer rate to image formation algorithms. As a result, it is now possible to build smartphone-compatible USB ultrasound probes for imaging the kidney, liver, bladder, and eyes, endocavity probes for prostate and uterine screenings and biopsies, and vascular probes for imaging veins and arteries for starting IVs and central lines.
Both medicine and global computer use will never be the same.
“You can carry around a probe and cell phone and image on the fly now,” said Richard. “Imagine having these smartphones in ambulances and emergency rooms.” “On a larger scale, this kind of cell phone is a complete computer that runs Windows. It could become the essential computer of the Developing World, where trained medical personnel are scarce, but most of the population, as much as 90 percent, have access to a cell phone tower.” “Twenty-first century medicine is defined by medical imaging,” said Zar. “Yet 70 percent of the world’s population has no access to medical imaging. It’s hard to take an MRI or CT scanner to a rural community without power.”
Shrinking the electronics over 25 years
Zar said the vision of the new system is to train people in remote areas of the developing world on the basics of gathering data with the phones and sending it to a centralized unit many miles, or half a world, away where specialists can analyze the image and make a diagnosis. Zar wrote the phone software and firmware for the probes; Richard came up with the low-power probe electronics design. He began working on ultrasound system designs 25 years ago, and in that span he has shrunk the electronics from cabinet-sized to a tiny circuit board one inch by three inches. A typical, portable ultrasound device may cost as much as $30,000. Some of these USB-based probes sell for less than $2,000 with the goal of a price tag as low as $500.

Scientists at the Singapore-based Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have made an unprecedented breakthrough in transforming carbon dioxide, a common greenhouse gas, into methanol, a widely used form of industrial feedstock and clean-burning biofuel. Using “organocatalysts”, researchers activated carbon dioxide in a mild and non-toxic process to produce the more useful chemical compound.

The “hot paper” report, published recently in the international chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie, has been described by reviewers as “very important”, an classification only given to 10% of the journal’s manuscripts.
This is because carbon dioxide emissions remain a hotly debated global issue, and are widely blamed for causing irreversible climate change. Carbon dioxide emissions produced by human activity are predominately due to the consumption of fossil fuels and, although figures vary, its concentration in the earth’s atmosphere are estimated to have risen by more than 30% since the industrial revolution. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that a 60% reduction of global carbon dioxide emissions is needed if carbon dioxide concentrations are to stabilize at present-day levels.
At the IBN, scientists have been able to make carbon dioxide react with a stable organocatalyst called N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) under mild conditions in dry air. “NHCs have shown tremendous potential for activating and fixing carbon dioxide,”says Siti Nurhanna Riduan, senior lab officer at IBN. “Our work can contribute towards transforming excess carbon dioxide in the environment into useful products, such as methanol.”
A combination of silica and hydrogen – called hydrosilane – is added to the NHC-activated carbon dioxide, which is transformed into methanol through hydrolysis. “Hydrosilane provides hydrogen, which bonds with carbon dioxide in a reduction reaction. This carbon dioxide reduction is efficiently catalyzed by NHCs even at room temperature. Methanol can be easily obtained from the product of the carbon dioxide reaction,” explains Dr Yugen Zhang, IBN team leader and principal research scientist.
“Our previous research on NHCs has demonstrated their multiple applications as powerful antioxidants to fight degenerative diseases, and as effective catalysts to transform sugars into an alternative energy source. We have now shown that NHCs can also be applied successfully to the conversion of carbon dioxide into methanol, helping to unleash the potential of this highly abundant gas.”
Scientific research becomes increasingly important to find solutions that curb global warming. Current research is focusing on green chemistry, which aims to eliminate the use of hazardous substances to prevent environmental pollution. IBN’s research aims to make the mass production of methanol more cost-effective, in the process reducing the amount of carbon dioxide released in the earth’s atmosphere.
“We are innovating effective methods of generating clean energy using green chemistry and nanotechnology,” explains Professor Jackie Y. Ying, IBN executive director of the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. “In the face of environmental pollution, global warming and increasing demands on diminishing fossil fuel resources, we hope to provide a viable alternative energy option for industry, and effective sequestration and conversion of carbon dioxide.”

Maker of Pleo, the dinosaur, now extinct

Posted by Wonderful-Tricks

An Eagle company that made a robot baby dinosaur toy has closed, dismissed its workers and filed for liquidation of its assets under federal bankruptcy law. Ugobe Inc., the maker of Pleo, filed under Chapter 7 of the federal bankruptcy code Friday in Boise. Ugobe (as in “you go be”) moved to Eagle from Emeryville, Calif., earlier this year. Its chief executive officer, Caleb Chung, drew nationwide publicity for his dinosaur, which had characteristics of a household pet.

The company said it sold 100,000 Pleo toys last year, collecting $20 million. An engineer and inventor, Chung also created the Furby, which became the “must-have” toy of the season when it was launched during the 1998 holiday season. More than 50 million of the google-eyed robotic Furbys were sold worldwide, according to the Ugobe Web site.
In the bankruptcy filing, Ugobe said it had assets of $1.6 million, including $1.5 million in machinery to make Pleo in Hong Kong, and liabilities of $3.6 million. Ugobe said it owes Chung $353,500 in unpaid royalties. Chung did not return a phone call requesting comment. Ugobe’s attorney, Bruce MacIntrye, with Perkins Coie in Seattle, said all of Ugobe’s employees had been let go, and the company is shut down. “Now it’s up to the trustee to identify the assets and decide how to get the most value out of them,” he said. A creditors meeting has been set for May 21. Chung also has become the poster boy for the Eagle-Star Technology Corridor.

Music workstations have been around for many years, but we’re yet to see something as slick as this Vivace concept. Designed by Young-Shin Lee and Hae-Jin Jung, the Vivace is a clamshell touchscreen instrument and computer, which offers multi-function playback, recording and editing all in one device.

As with other notebook concepts we’ve seen, the Vivace swaps a traditional QWERTY keyboard for a full touchscreen. In the Vivace’s case, however, this multitouch-capable panel is dedicated to music, with selectable samples and sounds, an equalizer and of course a piano keyboard with controls to flip through octaves.
Sadly it’s just a concept right now, meaning those looking for a portable music studio will probably still need to pack a separate laptop and controller keyboard. The keys themselves might need some assistance too; the lack of differentiation and physical feedback could make playing them tricky.
