The Very First Lighter Phone SB6309

Although I fully admit to chuckling quite a bit after first seeing this cellphone with a built-in cigarette lighter, I can see some practicality with it. After all, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard of my smoking friends losing their lighter. I’ve been asked numerous times if I happen to have a lighter on me, despite that they’re fully aware I don’t smoke. Having a lighter built into your cellphone would come in incredibly handy. After all, your phone is almost always somewhere within reach.....

Wii Cyberbike: roadtrip to nowhere

Wii Cyberbike: roadtrip to nowhere

I guess the whole point of the Nintendo Wii is to get you off your ass. This latest Wii accessory/game keeps you on your butt, but you still get to move. Sort of. It's the Cyberbike from Bigben Interactive, a European game accessory company. The Cyberbike is a full-size stationary bike - from its looks, not really Gold's Gym quality, but rather lightweight home basement quality. Pedal all you want, and you'll always wind up where you started — talk about an exercise in futility.

By pedaling, you get a workout. Two thumbs up for that. But since that's insanely boring, the Cyberbike lets you save the planet. The bundled game takes you through imaginary scenes where you mop up pollution. When the planet is all rainbows and sparkles again, you can also plug the bike into Mario Kart Wii.

If the Cyberbike came attached to an electric generator, so you can use pedal power to charge your electric toothbrush or something, I'd be more impressed. Even better, I'd give my Cyberbike to Lance Armstrong, and let him power Connecticut.

The Cyberbike will be available in Europe in January '10. Pricing not announced, but it's probably more expensive than an actual bicycle.

The see-through Nooka Zaz

Matt Waldman at Nooka has done it again. The Zaz is a see-through watch with an LCD sandwiched onto a transparent surface. You tell time by counting the blocks and reading the growing minutes bar and it comes with a black, silver, or white band.

At $380 it’s a bit pricier than some Nooka models but it’s still badass. They’ll be available in November.
Also, the last secret word is WARFARE.

This may look like an old cassette tape, but it hides not audio tape but measuring tape. It's so clever! And so useful! All you have to do is keep it in the unused cassette deck in your car and you'll always have a way of measuring things on hand, because lord knows how often you're stuck without that ability. It can be yours for a mere $8.

Bluetooth headset that can record your conversation

The Celltronix VR1 looks like an ordinary headset, but it is the first Bluetooth headset that can record up to 8 minutes of incoming and outgoing calls. You can also use it to record voice memos. I’m not convinced that this product really solves a problem, but I suppose the voice memo feature could be useful. If the VR1 sounds like something that you need, you can get one for a little over $100.

Craighton Berman Coil Lamp

COIL LAMP

Working-class extension cord with upper-class aspirations.
Coil Lamp reduces the domestic lamp to the absolute minimum of defining elements. A single electrical cord coils around what appears to be an empty volume, defining the iconic form of a table lamp and ultimately powering a single light bulb.

The entire form is created exclusively from a single 100 foot extension cord that has been wrapped around a laser-cut clear plexiglass form. This simple transformation elevates the status of the humble, everyday extension cord to the realm of high design.

Bell Alarm Clock by Sam Hecht for IDEA

Do you have a hard time getting up in the morning? Is the faint beep of your digital alarm clock not getting through to you? Does your iPod playlist not pack enough punch to get you up?

Well, let’s go back in time for a moment, when an alarm clock had two big bells at the top and they were certain to get you out of bed. What happened to those? Right, they disappeared because hand wound alarm clocks were, well, hand wound and offered quite a substantial margin of error, resulting in embarrassing situations…

Guess what, designer Sam Hecht has just upped the ante for the great guys over at IDEA International. He has taken the best of both worlds and put them into one fabulous product: A modern and precise and small alarm clock with a massive bell that will get you out of bed.

In three fabulous colors, the black and the red have the bell and the base the same color; the white has a chrome bell.

Now here’s why this is so amazing today: This product sees the light of day right here! Yup, we’re the first one to have this product ANYWHERE, courtesy of our dear friend Kip who is their fabulous distributor and we’re seriously excited!

With that said, ready set go, get your hands on this great clock! Oh, hang on: Size: W94 x D64 x H97mm and it needs 1 AA battery – that comes with it though.

Mechanical tumor, external heart, elastic cell

Interactive media artist Mio I-zawa’s “mechanical tumor” is a quivering hunk of fleshy, organic-looking material that expands and contracts depending on the amount of stress your computer is experiencing.

Equipped with a series of motors and pneumatic actuators, the mechanical tumor pulsates gently when the CPU load is low. When the CPU load is high, the tumor’s air compressor is activated, causing the lump of flesh to inflate.

The size of the tumor fluctuates according to the CPU utilization rate, giving the user a very tangible reading of the computer’s stress level.

Pixel Bulb is Neither Pixels Nor Bulb

Pixel Bulb is Neither Pixels Nor Bulb

This is the Pixel Bulb, low-res cartoon light-bulb cut from “electroluminescent electronic paper”. It’s a wonderful wall-lamp design, and the large flat area should provide a soft, relaxing light.

The problem is that it has nothing to do with pixels. If a rough, uneven, jagged edge meant “pixels” then I would have wonderful, 8-bit finger and toe-nails fit for Mario World. But it doesn’t, and I will remain in smooth, analog meatspace as I bite my fingers down to the cuticles. Somebody needs to either teach the lamp’s designer, Marcus Tremonto, what a square looks like, or just show him how to use scissors. A shame.

Dell Latitude Z: 16-inch notebook weighs 4.5 pounds, charges wirelessly

Dell’s got something for the business set today in the 16-inch Latitude Z, a $2000 notebook that measures just over half an inch thick, weighs 4.5 pounds, and charges wirelessly.
That’s right, thanks to the miracle of inductive charging, the Latitude Z needs only be placed atop a docking station that both rejuvenates the battery and connects the computer to various peripherals. The wireless dock will cost $200 and will be “available in the coming weeks” according to Dell’s press release.

The system’s 4.5-pound weight is made possible by using a relatively underwhelming 4-cell battery but, knowing Dell, you’ll very likely be able to outfit the system will bigger battery packs – at least a six cell, maybe even a nine cell.

Other features include a 1600×900 screen resolution, face recognition, and a multi-touch trackpad. The Latitude Z is available today although at the moment it’s not showing up on Dell’s site yet, so I’ve no idea what sort of CPU, RAM, and hard drive options are available.

Gizmodo is reporting that it uses an Intel ultra low-voltage CPU as well as an ARM processor for booting up in an instant-on mode. More details as they become available on Dell’s site

Tie with built-in bottle opener

If you have to wear a tie on a regular basis, it might as well be awesome. In that spirit, Argentina’s “Sinapsis” studio designed this “After Office Tie” for a recent DesignBoom.com competition. It’s a simple concept that makes a lot of sense: a tie with a bottle opener built into the bottom of it.

The tie will be exhibited at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts from September 30th to October 4th. Whether it’ll become an actual product someday is another story. I could see people buying them, though. Or you could probably make your own if you’re ambitious.
